NY Times reporter John Markoff explains how careless programming in C and C++ can lead to the security flaws reported this week in Outlook and Netscape Mail. More modern programs, such as Java, have built-in safeguards, which contribute to their relative slowness. Markoff concludes his article with an interesting quote from Robert Morris, former chief scientist of the National Security Agency, whose son, Robert Tappan Morris, almost brought down the Net by exploiting a similar flaw ten years ago.
